QUICKTIP: Howto reset vmware esxi 4.1 hypervisor password

Yes, it’s from local, with reboots and all that shits  we can’t do in production 🙂

1. Enter hypervisor in maintenance mode.

2. Reboot with Live Linux

3. Mount the partition cointains local.tgz file

4. Decompress local.tgz, edit etc/shadow file with your hash, copy back the editied file into the archive and archive into the mountpount.

5. Reboot.

 

IMPORTANT:

Keep in mind that esxi 4.1 shadow file work with old unix shadow files, aka md5(unix), so your hash must be $1$…. etc.
