HOWTO: Install and Configure NTPD time server on Debian

1. Install the ntp daemon

root@smtp1:~# apt-get install ntp

Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done

…….Processing triggers for man-db …
Setting up libopts25 (1:5.10-1.1) …
Setting up ntp (1:4.2.6.p2+dfsg-1+b1) …
Starting NTP server: ntpd.

2. Configure ntpd to the default debian stratum servers (in /etc/ntp.conf)

server 0.debian.pool.ntp.org iburst dynamic
server 1.debian.pool.ntp.org iburst dynamic
server 2.debian.pool.ntp.org iburst dynamic
server 3.debian.pool.ntp.org iburst dynamic

3. Allow other my server to update time from this server (in /etc/ntp.conf)

restrict SERVERS_INET mask SERVERS_INET_MASK nomodify
